Praia da Luz itself is a swimming beach. Its real advantage is where it sits: between the gentle bays of Lagos and the Atlantic swell of Sagres and the west coast. Here are the nine beaches we send our guests to, from first lesson to heavy barrels.
The short answer: from Praia da Luz you reach beginner waves at Meia Praia or Praia de Cabanas Velhas in about 15 minutes, the Sagres beaches (Praia do Tonel, Praia do Beliche) in about 25, and the west-coast classics (Praia do Amado, Praia da Arrifana) in 30 to 40. With a car you can choose each morning the beach that suits the swell and the wind.

*Approximate driving times from Villa Luz Bliss, Praia da Luz.
Lagos · ~15 min from the villa · beginners
A long, sandy bay east of Lagos with soft, forgiving waves and several surf schools. When the west coast is too big or too windy, this is where lessons happen.
Between Burgau and Salema · ~15 min from the villa · all levels
A small beach under limestone cliffs with peaks that break left and right over sand and a few rocks. It works at all tides and comes alive in winter, especially on days when Praia do Zavial is too big to surf.
Vila do Bispo · ~20 min from the villa · advanced
Famous for a fast, hollow right-hander that needs a solid winter swell and works best at low tide. The local crew is experienced: arrive with respect, or watch from the beach café.
Sagres · ~25 min from the villa · beginners
Sheltered bays where the swell loses power around the headland. On big winter days they are often the only place where beginners can still take a lesson.
Sagres · ~25 min from the villa · intermediate to advanced
Right below the Fortaleza de Sagres, Praia do Tonel faces the open Atlantic and picks up swell when the rest of the coast is flat. Powerful beach-break peaks, best in the morning before the wind.
Sagres · ~25 min from the villa · intermediate
A beach under high cliffs, reached by a long stairway, and sheltered from the north wind. A good option when Praia do Tonel is blown out.
Vila do Bispo · ~25 min from the villa · intermediate
A long, empty stretch of sand backed by dark cliffs, with consistent waves and plenty of space, even at weekends.
Carrapateira · ~30 min from the villa · all levels
The surf-camp hub of the Algarve: a wide bay with several peaks, so beginners and experienced surfers share the same beach. Neighbouring Praia da Bordeira is more powerful, with a strong current.
Aljezur · ~40 min from the villa · beginners in summer, advanced in winter
A horseshoe bay below a clifftop village. In summer the sandy break is ideal for learning; in winter a right-hander breaks at the northern end. Nearby Praia de Monte Clérigo and Praia da Amoreira are quieter alternatives.
Our sea-view villa above Praia da Luz sits between the bays of Lagos and the beaches of Sagres, a short drive from the first surf schools. After the session: a heated pool, papasan chairs on the terrace at sunset, and the Atlantic in front of you.

Is Praia da Luz good for surfing? Rarely. Praia da Luz is a calm bay that is better for swimming. Its advantage is that the surf beaches of Lagos and Sagres are a short drive away.
Where should a beginner surf near Lagos? Meia Praia in Lagos, Praia da Mareta and Praia do Martinhal in Sagres, or Praia do Amado with a surf school. On big days, the sheltered bays are the safest choice.
What is the best month to surf in the Algarve? For waves, October to April. For lessons and warmer water, May to September.
Do I need a car? Yes. Most spots are outside the towns, and you will want to change beach with the conditions.
