For a couple on a short break, a good hotel is hard to beat: someone else makes the bed, and nobody judges a third croissant. For a family of four to six, or a group of eight to ten, a private apartment or villa usually gives you far more: more space, more privacy and a lot more time together.
We host guests in both, so we will not pretend a villa is right for everyone. Here is the honest version: what each option costs, what you get for it, and where a hotel still wins. Eyes open, sunglasses on.
In August 2026, an occupied hotel room in the Algarve earned on average €225.20 a night, the highest rate in Portugal, according to official INE figures. That is an average across all hotel categories, from two to five stars, for one room that usually sleeps two.
The number that matters is how many rooms your party needs:
| Your party | Hotel rooms needed | At the Algarve average (Aug 2026) | Private alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Couple | 1 | about €225 a night | A hotel is often the simplest choice |
| Family of 4–6 | 2–3 | about €450–675 a night | One apartment with a kitchen and living room |
| Group or family of 8–10 | 4–5 | about €900–1,125 a night | One villa with 4 en-suite bedrooms and a private pool |
Two things push the hotel figure up, not down. Sea-view rooms in four- and five-star resorts in July and August cost well above the regional average. And every meal is eaten out or ordered in, for everyone, every day.
In a hotel you also get only a bedroom each. In an apartment or villa, the same budget pays for the living room, the kitchen, the terrace and, in a villa, a pool nobody else uses.
For a family or a small group of friends, an apartment is where the numbers work hardest. One apartment replaces two or three hotel rooms, and the kitchen changes your daily budget.
We have four apartments for up to 6 guests each. In Praia da Luz, near Lagos: Luz Bliss Apartment and Bela Vista Apartment. In Albufeira, on the central coast: Ocean Bliss 1 and Ocean Bliss 2.
Best for: families with children, couples travelling together, longer stays, and anyone who likes to live like a local rather than a hotel guest.
A villa is not a cheaper hotel. It is a different kind of holiday: one house, one pool and one table for the people you came with, and absolutely no one else. No small talk in the lift, and no need for a “Do Not Disturb” sign.
What about the kitchen? In a villa, the kitchen is not there to save money. It is there so you never have to leave: a long breakfast by the pool, a barbecue at sunset, a birthday cake at midnight (and a second slice at 2 a.m.; we won't tell). For the evenings that matter, many of our guests book a private chef who cooks and serves at the villa. Prefer a quieter evening? A chef can also prepare a full meal and have it delivered to the door, like a fine-dining takeaway, ready to serve on the terrace. Ask us and we will share the chefs we recommend.
Best for: multi-generational families, groups of friends, celebrations, and anyone for whom the people matter more than the hotel lobby.
A fair comparison has to say where hotels win, and they do win a few rounds. If these matter most to you, book the hotel with our blessing.
| Hotel | Apartment or villa | |
|---|---|---|
| Housekeeping | Daily | Usually a final clean; extra cleans on request |
| Breakfast | Served, often included | You make it, or have it delivered |
| Reception | 24 hours on site | Your hosts by phone, with a personal welcome on arrival |
| Kids' club, spa, restaurants | Often on site | Nearby, or brought to you (private chef, massage at the villa) |
| Short stays | One night is fine | A minimum stay may apply in high season |
| Deposit | Card guarantee | A security deposit for the property |
For most families and groups staying a week, these are small trade-offs for the space and the privacy. For a couple on a two-night city break, the hotel often wins. That is fine: we will still be here for the anniversary.
Compare the total for your whole party, for the whole stay, not a nightly rate against a nightly rate.
Is a villa cheaper than a hotel in the Algarve? Not always per night, but often per room. A villa for up to 10 guests replaces four or five hotel rooms, and adds a private pool and living space. Compare the total for your whole party.
Is an apartment a good choice for a family of four to six? Yes, especially for a week or more. A kitchen and separate bedrooms make daily life easier and keep the meal budget under control.
Can we have a private chef at the villa? Yes. Many guests book a chef to cook at the villa for one or two evenings. You can also order a chef-prepared dinner delivered to the villa. Ask us before your stay and we will share our recommendations.
Will we need a car? It depends on the property and your plans. Each of our homes is minutes from the beach; ask us about getting around before you book.
When should we book for summer? As early as you can. Families and groups usually book July and August during the winter and early spring, and the best villa weeks go first.
