9 surf gems near Lagos and Praia da Luz, from first waves to perfect barrels

Last updated: 28 October 2026

Praia da Luz itself is a swimming beach. Its real advantage is where it sits: between the gentle bays of Lagos and the Atlantic swell of Sagres and the west coast. Here are the nine beaches we send our guests to, from first lesson to heavy barrels.

The short answer: from Praia da Luz you reach beginner waves at Meia Praia or Praia de Cabanas Velhas in about 15 minutes, the Sagres beaches (Praia do Tonel, Praia do Beliche) in about 25, and the west-coast classics (Praia do Amado, Praia da Arrifana) in 30 to 40. With a car you can choose each morning the beach that suits the swell and the wind.

Gentle waves, close to Lagos

Meia Praia

Lagos · ~15 min from the villa · beginners

A long, sandy bay east of Lagos with soft, forgiving waves and several surf schools. When the west coast is too big or too windy, this is where lessons happen.

Praia de Cabanas Velhas

Between Burgau and Salema · ~15 min from the villa · all levels

A small beach under limestone cliffs with peaks that break left and right over sand and a few rocks. It works at all tides and comes alive in winter, especially on days when Praia do Zavial is too big to surf.

The south-facing beaches of Sagres

Praia do Zavial

Vila do Bispo · ~20 min from the villa · advanced

Famous for a fast, hollow right-hander that needs a solid winter swell and works best at low tide. The local crew is experienced: arrive with respect, or watch from the beach café.

Praia da Mareta & Praia do Martinhal

Sagres · ~25 min from the villa · beginners

Sheltered bays where the swell loses power around the headland. On big winter days they are often the only place where beginners can still take a lesson.

Praia do Tonel

Sagres · ~25 min from the villa · intermediate to advanced

Right below the Fortaleza de Sagres, Praia do Tonel faces the open Atlantic and picks up swell when the rest of the coast is flat. Powerful beach-break peaks, best in the morning before the wind.

Praia do Beliche

Sagres · ~25 min from the villa · intermediate

A beach under high cliffs, reached by a long stairway, and sheltered from the north wind. A good option when Praia do Tonel is blown out.

The wild west coast

Praia da Cordoama

Vila do Bispo · ~25 min from the villa · intermediate

A long, empty stretch of sand backed by dark cliffs, with consistent waves and plenty of space, even at weekends.

Praia do Amado

Carrapateira · ~30 min from the villa · all levels

The surf-camp hub of the Algarve: a wide bay with several peaks, so beginners and experienced surfers share the same beach. Neighbouring Praia da Bordeira is more powerful, with a strong current.

Praia da Arrifana

Aljezur · ~40 min from the villa · beginners in summer, advanced in winter

A horseshoe bay below a clifftop village. In summer the sandy break is ideal for learning; in winter a right-hander breaks at the northern end. Nearby Praia de Monte Clérigo and Praia da Amoreira are quieter alternatives.

When to come

  • Autumn to spring (October to April): the Atlantic swells arrive. Best for intermediate and advanced surfers; beginners stay in the sheltered bays.
  • Spring and autumn: often the sweet spot for intermediate surfers, with fewer crowds.
  • Summer: smaller waves and lifeguards on most beaches. Ideal for lessons and families.
  • Water and wetsuits: around 15–16 °C in winter (4/3 mm wetsuit), up to about 22 °C at the end of summer.

Practical tips

  • A car is essential: the best beach changes with the swell and wind direction, and buses do not reach most spots.
  • Check a forecast before you leave; surf early, before the afternoon wind.
  • Strong currents run at some west-coast beaches. Surf near others and ask a local school when in doubt.
